Description
Another on-site painting from the eastern edge of Carl Schurz Park on the upper East Side. The Esplanade above the FDR Drive, a mecca for joggers, strollers and dog-walkers, was named John Finley Walk in 1942 to honor a former City College president and New York Times editor known for his love of walking the city's neighborhoods -- including an annual trek around Manhattan's perimeter. It was Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia, a long-time friend of Finley's, who had the idea to place his strolling silhouette on the elegant Art Deco signs that line the esplanade.
