Another on-site painting from the eastern edge of Carl Schurz Park on the upper East Side. The Esplanade above the FDR Drive, a mecca for joggers, strollers and dog-walkers, was named John Finley Walk in 1942 to honor a former City College president and New York Times editor known for his love of walking the city's neighborhoods -- including an annual trek around Manhattan's perimeter. It was Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia, a long-time friend of Finley's, who had the idea to place his strolling silhouette on the elegant Art Deco signs that line the esplanade.
Peter Salwen's light-filled urban landscapes are in collections across the U.S., Europe and South America. Salwen's paintings, he says "try to express the deep pleasure to be found in something as simple as sunlight on a wall or the ordinary traffic of people and machinery at city street corner. At heart they are simply thank-you notes to Nature for providing such an endless array of visual joys, most especially in New York City, which is of course Nature's noblest creation.
