Artist's Description

These scraggly, contorted trees around our campsite always put me in mind of tormented souls. In fact, the ubiquitous pitch pint (Pinus rigida) is a tough, fire-adapted species that thrives on the acidic sandy soil of the outer Cape. Like any tree, they do struggle to grab their share of sunlight (which may account for some of the weirdly twisted branches) and locals tell me they're also affected by the harsh winter winds.
