Description
From above Centre Street and Foley Square -- Manhattan's Civic Center -- the view across the East River toward Long Island is dominated by the gilded pyramid atop architect Cass Gilbert's 590-foot-tall U.S. Federal Courthouse (1936). In 2001, the Classical Revival building was renamed in honor of Thurgood Marshall (1908-93), the first African-American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court (1967-91).
