Description
Advice to Amtrak passengers: as you approach NYC, put down that iPad or whatever and look out the window, and you can get a great close-up view of some of the country's stunning engineering achievements. When it opened in 1917 the Hell Gate was the world's largest through-arch bridge; later it was the model for the world-famous Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia. These colossal finials along the approach don't have a lot to do with the bridge's structure or function, but they're one of my favorite features.
